Celebrating God’s Story

Posted on by Bonnie Rodriguez

I want to tell you about two very special seniors: Yolande & Citlali.  Words fall short of truly expressing my love and joy for them, but I’m going to try! For 8 years, these two young ladies have been part of my journey with Youth for Christ.  I’ve been rocking with Yolande since she was in 4th grade, and Citlali joined us in 2004 when KIX was partnering with Open House (TML).

When Yolande first started coming to KIX, the expression that I think of is “one tough cookie!”  But God always helped me look beyond that to see her heart…and she really was a big baby underneath that hard exterior!  The youngest of three (with two tough older brothers!), Yolande marched to her own tune and never followed the crowd around her.  KIX gave her opportunities to turn that independent, headstrong spirit into one that served others, stood up for those who didn’t have a voice, and loved hard.

Yolande trusted Christ while in 4th grade and immediately the Holy Spirit began working in her!  When she wasn’t upfront leading a group of her peers or our elementary students, Yolande allowed me to be there for her. God made us more or less family, and I will always treasure the bond that we have. Yolande is my baby, and now I have to release her into the crazy world with the Holy Spirit to guide her. She is joining the military and hopes to start a Bible study group in her unit.

Citlali may be small in size but she is force to be reckoned with! She is strong and mighty. We connected on a different level through meaningful conversations about mutual life experiences, namely being the first born to single, immigrant mothers, and the immense pressure that lays on your shoulders. This created a bond and trust between us that will last forever. Citlali is going off to college to study event planning, and hopes to start her own events company.

Ladies, you are two of the most ingenious, funny, and resilient girls I know.  I cannot wait to see the AWESOME things that God has in store for you. I know you are going to be just fine.

At YFC, we say that God meets us in our stories, and He uses our stories to connect us to others and Himself.  I know this has been true for me, Citlali and Yolande.  As they go off into the world, I look towards the other kids who need to know, like these girls, that there is hope for them in this life and the next.  And they will learn that as YFC shares God’s story with them. Thank you for making it possible for us to raise kids in Jesus: from here to eternity!
